Even though it was released a long time ago, the iPhone 6 has recently become the center of attention for a very specific reason: its obsolescence.
You don't need to be the most tech-savvy person in the world to know that Apple products have become highly desired objects for a large portion of the population.
Proof of this is that, every year, the brand's new product launch events attract attention from around the world.
On the day these launches take place, everyone keeps an eye out to find out what new features will be included in the new models.
And, despite the price being a little steep for most of us – especially here in Brazil, where the extremely high prices of products are always a topic of discussion – smartphones from the most famous apple in the world are always sales successes.
That said, if you think we're going to talk about the iPhone 14 – and all the products that were part of the brand's latest launch event – you're wrong.
In today's content, we're going to go the opposite way and talk more about another Apple device that, despite having been launched well before the iPhone 14, became the center of attention and was remembered again precisely because of this launch: the iPhone 6.
Did you know that the device has just reached vintage status by officially becoming obsolete?
Don't understand? Don't worry, we'll explain it to you!
Throughout today's text, we will explain in more detail what this means and the real reason why the device received so much attention with this launch.
Remember the iPhone 6
For those who don't remember this Apple model, we'll help you remember!
The iPhone 6 is the eighth generation of the iPhone – despite being called the iPhone 6 – it was developed by Apple.
The device was presented during an event called Apple Live, which is nothing more than the show that the company organizes to launch its new products.
Released on September 9, 2014, it was launched alongside the iPhone 6 Plus and Apple Watch. Among the improvements to the device compared to the previous model were the hardware upgrade, an increase in screen size from 4 to 4.7 inches, and the operating system – iOS 8 – straight from the factory. The latest iOS compatible with the iPhone 6 is iOS 12.
Here in Brazil, the launch of the device took a little longer to happen, arriving in stores here on November 14, 2014.
At the time, the iPhone 6 arrived in stores here at the suggested price of R$3,199.00 in its most basic version.
On launch day, the iPhone 6 Plus and iPhone 6 did not disappoint in terms of sales. The models sold more than 4 million units in the first 24 hours of pre-orders.
The obsolescence of the iPhone 6 and other products
A topic that has been widely discussed in recent years – even becoming the subject of studies and research – is planned obsolescence.
This term argues that big brands have something like an expiration date for electronic products.
For those who don't know, planned obsolescence occurs when the supplier purposely manipulates its products so that they fail after a certain period of time.
This would mean that certain products involving technology have a kind of expiration date.
In other words, the manufacturer uses its engineering to adulterate the products, causing them to have a shorter useful life than they should.
And, at the moment – which usually doesn't take long – when that particular device stops working, the user finds himself obliged to buy another device that is newer than the previous one.
That said, you may have noticed that different types of products used to last much longer than they do today, right?
This fragility and ease of breaking is precisely the way found to encourage consumption even more.
What other devices accompany the iPhone 6 in this obsolescence?
But although only the iPhone 6 has become vintage, other Apple smartphones have also started to feel the effects of this obsolescence.
For those who don't know, along with the launch of the iPhone 14, there was also the launch of iOS 16, the new update available for Apple smartphones.
But there is a small catch: not all Apple users will have access to this update.
It is only available for the brand's newer phones. And besides the iPhone 6, other models will also not receive the new software.
They are: the iPhone 6S, 6S Plus, iPhone 7, iPhone 7 Plus and the iPhone SE 2016.
Why did the device come to be considered a vintage device?
As you can imagine, the iPhone 6 has reached this vintage device status precisely because of the time it has been since it was released.
As we mentioned here, it was launched in 2014. That is: 8 years ago. And it stopped being sold in Apple stores and on the official website more than 5 years ago.
This makes him fall into that category.
And while it still receives technical support and occasional software patch packages, the device no longer receives the annual updates that the company releases.
Conclusion
Do you have an iPhone 6? As you can see, although you probably have a special affection for your device – since it will probably be by your side for many years – it may be time to retire your little friend.
After all, even though it is still in good condition, with the advancement of Apple's operating systems, it is becoming increasingly full of restrictions and, consequently, may offer certain limitations when it comes to your experience as a user.
And if you've been won over by Apple, you can look for one that suits you.
