BR-101, Brazil

We're talking about the R504 Kolyma Highway. Located in the far east of Russia, the road earned this nickname because its construction began under the leadership of Soviet leader Stalin.

During the construction – which was carried out mostly by Siberian prisoners – it is estimated that around 1 million people died during the works.

And, to make the process easier, their bodies were buried under and along the roadside. This gave rise to the popular name.
