Where are the photos gone?

When you delete a photo from your cell phone, it usually doesn't erase it instantly or permanently from its storage.

What the system does is mark the space that this photo occupies as “available”. The file remains there, invisible to you, until a new data (another photo, a video or an app) takes its place.

That's why time is key: the sooner you try to recover it, the more likely you are to achieve it.

⚠ Important: While trying to recover your photos, avoid taking new photos, downloading files or installing unnecessary applications. Each new date can occupy the space of the photo you want to save.

Method 1: Review the “Eliminados” Carpet”

Both Android and iPhone have a kind of “stationery” where blurry photos are stored for a while before disappearing. It should always be your first step, because it is the simplest and safest method.

On iPhone (iOS)

  1. Open the “Photos” app.
  2. Go to “Albums” and scroll to the “Utilities” section.
  3. Tap “Deleted”. Then you will see the photos and videos that were blurred in the last few days.
  4. Select the photos you want and tap “Recover”.

On Android

The names change a little according to the brand (Samsung, Motorola, Xiaomi, etc.), but the process is similar.

  1. Open your Gallery or Google Photos app.
  2. Search the menu (three dots or three lines) and go to “Paperera” or “Deleted elements”.
  3. Keep the photo you want to recover pressed.
  4. Tap “Restore”. The photo will return to your gallery.

Method 2: Search your Backup Copy in the Cloud

If the photo is not on the stationery, review your services in the cloud. Many people have the automatic copy activated without knowing it, and there could be the photo you are looking for.

Services like Google Photos, iCloud, Dropbox or OneDrive can save a copy of your images, even if you erase them from your cell phone.

In Google Photos

Go to photos.google.com with the same Google account on your cell phone. Use the search bar to find the photo by close, including by what appears in it.

On iCloud

If you have “Photos in iCloud” enabled, go to iCloud.com from a browser, sign in with your Apple ID and open the “Photos” section. Your images could be there, lists to download.

✓ Advice: Also review the cloud paper. On Google Photos, backed-up elements are kept for 60 days (30 days if you don't have a copy). On iPhone, the “Deleted” button keeps them for about 30 days.

Method 3: Use a Recovery App

If none of the above worked, you can try it with a specialized application. These tools scan your cell phone's storage in search of blurry photos that have not yet been replaced by other data.

After finishing the scan, you will usually be shown a preview of what can be recovered. This is how you choose which photos to save, preferably in a secure location like the cloud or your computer.

Are these apps safe?
Download them solo from the official stores (Google Play or App Store), read the reviews and check what permissions you ask before installing them.
Do I have to modify my cell phone to use them?
No. Many apps offer a basic scan without modifying the system. Changing the cell phone system (root or jailbreak) may affect your security and warranty, so we do not recommend it.
Is recovery guaranteed?
No. It all depends on you whether the space in the photo was occupied by other data. The sooner you act, the worse your chances will be.

How to Avoid Losing Your Photos in the Future

The best way to avoid this scare again is to prevent it. Once you recover your photos, adopt these habits:

  • ✓ Activate automatic copying: Set up Google Photos, iCloud or another service so that you can save your photos without having to wake up.
  • ✓ Make copies on your computer: From time to time, transfer your photos to your computer or to an external drive.
  • ✓ Don't fill your memory: Full storage can cause failures and make it more difficult to recover files.

With these small changes, your most important memories will be much better protected, no matter what happens with your cell phone.

Warning: The effectiveness of recovery methods may vary depending on the time passed since deletion and use of the device. The recovery of files is not guaranteed. The brands mentioned belong to their respective owners.
