Little Lo

A success on social media, Lorrane Silva – or Pequena Lo – has recently gained the spotlight.

His videos depicting funny everyday situations began to go viral on TikTok, a video app that became a craze during the pandemic.

She is the protagonist of the first of our stories of overcoming in today's content.

She, who was born with shortened limbs due to a syndrome that has not yet been identified by doctors – but which is now associated with bone dysplasia – walked normally until she was 11 years old.

But, after 5 surgeries, she had to start using crutches and, over time, she adopted a scooter to get around.

Today, at 25 years old and with a degree in psychology, Pequena Lo says she has learned to deal with her condition with good humor and, with the fame and visibility acquired through the internet, she has become an activist and spokesperson for the fight for the rights of people with disabilities.

She currently participates in advertising campaigns, magazine covers and already has 4.3 million followers on Instagram.

Fabio Assuncao

Another story of overcoming that is well known to the public is that of actor Fábio Assunção.

A regular in the hall of heartthrobs on Brazilian television, Fábio Assunção was one of the most sought-after actors for many years.

After gaining fame in the 90s, the actor's rise was visible, and he starred in numerous projects, such as the soap operas Por Amor, Força de um Desejo and Paraíso Tropical.

But his successful career was interrupted by his drug addiction.

After years of fighting against it, Fábio publicly admitted his drug addiction and even took a break from television to treat it.

In 2017, after facing new problems, the actor chose to seek treatment in Argentina.

After his recovery, Fábio resumed his acting career, and he is now back to acting normally.

Malala Yousafzai

One of the most well-known stories of overcoming adversity in the last decade was that of Pakistani teenager Malala Yousafzai.

Malala's life changed in October 2012. At the age of 15, while leaving school, Malala was shot in the head by Taliban.

The attack occurred after the student exposed her daily life during the Taliban occupation and spoke out against the ban on education for women.

After the attack, Malala was in serious condition and had to be transferred to a hospital in the United Kingdom to fully recover.

What Malala didn't know was that the attack she suffered triggered a movement of support – nationally and internationally – allowing her struggle to gain even more voice.

After that, the teenager's life changed completely. In 2013, Malala was on the cover of Time magazine and was considered one of the 100 most influential people in the world that year.

She also spoke in favor of universal access to education at the headquarters of the United Nations (UN).

In addition to all this, Malala also received the Nobel Peace Prize for her fight against repression and for access to education for young people and children.

This made Malala the youngest person to receive the Nobel Prize.

Fernando Fernandes

This story has recently gained new chapters and deserves a special place in our article.

Fernando became known to the media in the early 2000s, after participating in Big Brother Brasil 2.

With a good physique, Fernando divided his time between his career as an athlete and modeling campaigns.

But his life changed forever in 2009. After a car accident on July 4th, Fernando became paraplegic and had to adapt to this new reality.

Even after the accident, sport spoke louder and he began a successful career in the Paralympic world – a version of the Olympics aimed exclusively at competitors with disabilities – and became three-time and four-time champion in several championships he participated in, becoming a reference in the sport.

Recently, Fernando's name has returned to the spotlight for a very good reason: He was announced as the host of the new season of No Limite – a reality show on Rede Globo that focuses on extreme events that test the physical resistance of competitors.

With the announcement, Fernando became the first presenter with a disability on the show. This achievement is a great story of overcoming obstacles.

Mary of Penha

Another story of overcoming that became known throughout Brazil is that of the pharmacist Maria da Penha.

After years of living in a never-ending cycle of violence, in 1983 Maria was the victim of a double attempted femicide.

Marco, her husband at the time, shot her in the back while Maria was sleeping. Due to injuries suffered from the gunshot, Maria ended up becoming paraplegic.

Marco even lied to the police, saying that the shooting was the result of an attempted robbery.

Four months after the attack, upon returning home, Maria was held in solitary confinement for 15 days and Marco even tried to electrocute her while she was taking a shower.

After this episode, Maria began a real battle to have her husband convicted of the crimes he committed.

After much struggle, Maria's journey and her fight for justice gave rise to the Maria da Penha Law, whose main objective is to prevent acts of domestic violence against women and, in cases where it occurs, seeks to stipulate appropriate punishment for the aggressor.

This law was an achievement, as it helped – and still helps – thousands of women who face the same situation that Maria da Penha faced.
