Officially opened on September 7, 1895, the Ipiranga Museum was called the Natural History Museum.

And among the entire collection that is part of the museum, one of the most emblematic works is the painting “Independence or Death”, a work painted by the artist Pedro Américo, in 1888.

When and why was the Ipiranga Museum closed?

Even though the Ipiranga Museum was one of the most well-known tourist attractions in the capital of São Paulo, this did not prevent the facility from going through some rough times in the last decade.

This is because the museum was officially closed in August 2013 after it was discovered that there were a series of serious problems related to its structure.

This issue was so serious that it could even result in the collapse of part of the structure. 

And to preserve both the works that were part of its collection at the time and the thousands of people who visited the place every year, the place ended up being closed.

Most of the collection was transferred to properties for storage, but other pieces were loaned.

These loans went to other museums and cultural spaces, to continue participating in shows and exhibitions.

Despite this closure, the work itself only began in 2019 and, so that the entire site could be properly revitalized, around R$235 million were invested.

And with this reopening, the expectation is that the place will receive around 900 thousand to 1 million visitors per year.

When is the Ipiranga Museum reopening?

In fact, the reopening took place on September 6th, but on that day visits were exclusively open to authorities who wanted to visit the site.

And on September 7th – a holiday that marked the celebration of 200 years of Brazil's independence – the Ipiranga Museum was also reopened.

But this time it was exclusively for schools and for the workers who helped during the restoration work at the site and their families.

For the general public, the place will be officially reopened today, September 8th!

The site underwent restoration, expansion and, to serve the public, received new digital and technological resources to further improve the visitor experience.
