Why does climate change happen?

If there is one issue that is part of all our reality, it is climate change.

Even though it may seem like a problem that doesn't affect our lives that much, these climate changes are affecting our routine.

Even if little by little, climate change is becoming a real threat to the future of humanity and life on our planet.

But do you know exactly what climate change is and why it happens?

In today's content, you will be able to clear up your main doubts regarding this topic.

Throughout the text, we will talk a little more about climate change, why it occurs and what threats these climate changes can bring to our future.

What is climate change?

A topic that has been very present in various media outlets is climate change.

These changes are the long-term alterations that occur in relation to the temperature and climate patterns on our planet.

Even though they happen in the long term, year after year it is possible to feel the effects of these climate changes more and more.

Among these effects, the main one is the increase in the planet's temperature. And this warming results in the gradual melting of the glaciers located at the planet's poles.

And in turn, this melting contributes to sea level rise, putting hundreds of coastal cities at risk in the long term.

In other words: everything becomes a big snowball that puts all of humanity at risk.

Why does climate change happen?

Although some of these types of changes may happen due to natural reasons.

Variations in the solar cycle, for example, can cause these changes.

But most of these changes have a single person responsible: human beings.

Since human beings began a frantic race in search of development, the entire planet has been suffering directly and indirectly the effects of this movement.

Currently, almost all activities that are part of human development have direct effects on the intensity of these climate changes.

A simple and easy-to-understand example is the emission of gases.

A series of activities carried out by human beings on a daily basis – from transport to industry – release tons of CO² into our atmosphere.

It is estimated that, per year, this quantity already exceeds 40 billion tons.

This type of gas is the main cause of what we know as the greenhouse effect, one of the main causes of climate change as we know it today.

What are the main causes of climate change?

Finding out the main causes of these climate changes is not that difficult. Just take a look at human actions towards the planet.

Especially because human activity is the main cause of climate change.

But, to illustrate, we have separated two of the main causes of climate change that the Earth has been facing – with even greater intensity – since the last century.

The burning of fossil fuels

This is perhaps the main cause of the climate changes we are experiencing.

The burning of fossil fuels – which are derived from petroleum, natural gas and coal – is present in a large part of the activities carried out by human beings today.

Present in our society with greater intensity since around 1800, the burning of these fuels is present in actions that are part of our daily lives.

These actions include energy generation, industries and even most forms of transport and the way we move around – whether by car, motorbike, bus or truck.

Deforestation

Another action that can be directly attributed to man and that contributes even more to climate change is the increase in deforestation.

As many of you may already know, trees play a fundamental role in maintaining the quality of the air we breathe.

To put it simply, it's as if trees act as 'filters' for the planet's air.

But the constant increase in activities involving deforestation is worrying.

More and more areas where there were trees are becoming spaces dedicated to agriculture.

Furthermore, with the climate becoming increasingly dry due to all the climate changes the world is facing, droughts and forest fires are becoming more and more frequent.

This means that even areas known for their biodiversity – such as the Amazon Rainforest and the Pantanal – are becoming increasingly threatened.

What are the effects of these changes on the future of humanity?

In addition to rising temperatures across the planet, the effects of climate change will cause environmental impacts that are irreversible.

This will put all types of life on Earth at risk.

Among the effects that attract the most attention are:

the collapse of ecosystems, the extinction of several animal species, the rise in the level – and even the warming – of the oceans and the shortage of drinking water.

These effects are directly related to the increase in drought, disease and hunger among several nations around the world.

Is there still time to reverse the effects caused by climate change?

Even though many still find this rush to reverse the situation a little alarmist, it is not.

The situation of the planet and the effects caused by climate change have reached a point where it will be very difficult to reverse these effects.

Even if countries take part in actions that seek to reduce their carbon emissions, deforestation and damage to our planet, it will not be easy.

the situation has already reached a level where it would take a lot of effort to try to undo all this evil.

But unfortunately we know that this will be a practically impossible task.

After all, there are several countries that are governed by leaders who only aim for development.

They minimize and do not care about this type of topic, believing that this type of warning is something exaggerated.

Conclusion

As you can see, climate change is increasingly present.

And in the not-so-distant future, they will directly interfere in various aspects of our lives.

It is up to each of us to do our part to help minimize the harmful effects that our development as a society is having on the planet.
