Many people still enjoy watching open TV channels and enjoying soap operas, talk shows and daily newspapers that bring the latest news.

Although it seems like a very common thing, many people know the name “Silvio Santos” but do not know the name of the channel he owns or even what the acronym means or a little about the channel’s history.

For those who don't know, the channel's name is “SBT” and this acronym means Sistema Brasileiro de TV and it was launched on August 19, 1981, that is, it is 41 years old (soon to be 42 years old) and was founded by the Silvio Santos Group which is led by him.

Despite being the owner, Silvio is not the president of the channel, the position is in the hands of his daughter Renata Abravanel, one of his six daughters with Iris Abravanel.

SBT emerged after a public competition held by the federal government that requested that two open TV channels be launched and Silvio managed to launch SBT with some concessions from the now defunct TV Tupi.

The opening of the channel was announced live on the channel, being the first program shown on the channel.

The channel became an instant success and to this day is one of the most successful channels in Brazil, ranking third as the largest audience in Brazil, behind the audience leader Globo and just behind Record TV.

The channel is also well known for having had a partnership with Televisa, one of the biggest channels in Latin America and for having brought several hits from Mexico to Brazil, such as “Maria do Bairro”, “A Usurpadora”, “Marimar”, “Rebelde” and “Cúmplices de um Resgate”.

Despite being a channel that is almost universally known and almost everyone knows its owner, there are some interesting facts about the channel that many people don't know and we decided to bring them to you today.

It took 5 years for the channel to be broadcast throughout Brazil

Despite having been launched in 1981, the channel was not yet shown throughout Brazil, because those were different times and things did not work the same way they do today.

The channel was only shown in Rio de Janeiro, but after five years, in 1986, Silvio Santos obtained some more concessions and acquired TVS, which made SBT a channel for the whole of Brazil.

First program

As we said above, the first program broadcast by the channel was an announcement of the new channel and it was made by Silvio Santos, sitting in the main hall of the Ministry of Communications, something very formal and different from what it is today, where the presenter is more relaxed with his audience.

Borrowed studio

In the first 15 years of the channel, its programs did not have a studio to be recorded and borrowed a studio from the Cinesol channel, which was in São Paulo, however Silvio Santos' program was the only one on the schedule that was recorded at the Silvio Santos theater, in the Carandiru neighborhood.

Floods

The old SBT studio located in Vila Guilherme in São Paulo suffered several floods due to floods caused by the Tietê River and many of the channel's archives were destroyed at the time. This happened between 1982 and 1998.

Some of these floods also interfered with the recordings of several programs such as Bozo, Show da Maravilha and Casa da Angélica.

Current Headquarters

On August 19, 1996, the day that marked the channel's 15th anniversary, the official SBT studio was inaugurated, the CDT of Anhanguera, which is still the program's current headquarters and has recordings of all its auditorium programs and the channel's soap operas.

Present day

Silvio Santos still continues to present his program that airs every Sunday, even at the age of 92, and has already said in an interview that he wants to continue presenting until the end of his days.
