After a 2020 marked by the pandemic, the future of cinema in 2021 was uncertain.
But, even with the COVID-19 pandemic – and the restrictive measures to help control the disease – being a major obstacle for cinemas, the box office of some films did not disappoint, making cinema in 2021 marked by true successes.
And that's what we're going to talk about today!
In today's content, we'll take a brief look back at 2021, and talk about the biggest box office hits that were part of last year.

Dune
How about starting with one of the most anticipated films in theaters in 2021?
Based on the book of the same name by Frank Helbert, the science fiction film is set in a very distant future and follows the trajectory of Paul Atreides, a young man with rare gifts.
To save the people of his home planet, Paul is sent to Arrakis, an extremely hostile and dangerous planet, in search of the most valuable substance in the universe. Only then will Paul be able to guarantee the survival of his people.
With a sequel already guaranteed, Dune has grossed US$390 million worldwide at the box office.
Eternals
It's no secret that Marvel movies are always synonymous with box office success. And Eternals was no different.
In the film, we follow the Eternals, a group of immortal superheroes who have been present on Earth for millions of years.
After living without interfering in the conflicts involving human life all this time, the team will need to reunite to fight against the Deviants, enemies that threaten the existence of humanity.
Despite following a slightly different formula from previous MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe) films – with more serious language and not as much comic relief – and not being able to please all fans of superhero films, the film was one of the biggest cinema hits in 2021, surpassing the US$400 million mark at the box office.
Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings
Another representative of Marvel, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is another film that caused a lot of expectation among fans of superhero films.
In the film, we follow the life of Shang-Chi, a young Chinese man, son of the leader of a very powerful criminal organization.
Despite having been raised since childhood to be part of this entire universe, Shang-Chi decides to abandon this path and run away, in search of a peaceful life far from all of this.
But what Shang-Chi didn't expect was that the presence of an ancient and powerful threat would force him to face his own past.
In addition to revealing a character that had not yet been seen in the MCU, Shang-Chi became the studio's first Asian superhero.
All these factors contributed to the success of the film, which grossed more than US$430 million at the worldwide box office.
Godzilla vs. Kong
What happens when two of the most classic creatures in cinema history face off in an epic battle?
In addition to a lot of destruction, box office success is also almost guaranteed.
In Godzilla vs. Kong, we can witness the explosive clash between two of cinema's most famous monsters.
The film, which serves as the first crossover of the MonsterVerse – a cinematic universe created by Warner Bros. – is the direct sequel to Godzilla, Kong: Skull Island and Godzilla II – King of the Monsters and achieved a worldwide box office of around US$$ 467.8 million.
This box office is quite significant, considering that the film's release was one of the first blockbusters released amid the pandemic.
Venom: Let There Be Carnage
One of the most well-known – and beloved – anti-heroes by Marvel fans, Venom: Let There Be Carnage is the symbiote's second film and shows that, despite having advanced a lot, the relationship between Venom and Eddie (Tom Hardy) is far from perfect.
And this friendship is put to the test when they need to work together to face a very powerful enemy.
Released in October, the film surpassed the incredible mark of US$500 million, becoming yet another success for Marvel and opening the doors for a possible third film.
Fast and Furious 9
It's no secret that Fast and Furious is one of the most successful franchises in cinema history.
Comprising eight films, Fast and Furious arrived with its ninth chapter in cinemas around the world in 2021.
In the new film, we follow the quiet life that Dominic Toretto (Vin Diesel) leads alongside Letty (Michelle Rodriguez) and his son.
But Dominic's past returns to haunt his family and threaten them once again. This will force him to assemble his entire team again to face this danger.
As expected, the film was a huge box office success, surpassing the US$725 million mark worldwide and consolidating itself as one of the biggest cinema hits in 2021.
Spider-Man: No Way Home
This was, without a doubt, one of the most anticipated films of 2021.
The hype surrounding Spider-Man's third adventure has always been high. And expectations only increased after rumors emerged indicating the presence of Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield reprising their roles alongside Tom Holland, the "acting" Peter Parker.
The plot, which takes place shortly after the events of the second film, shows Peter Parker facing the greatest challenge of his entire life: dealing with the exposure of his true identity and the effects that the revelation made by the villain Mysterio at the end of “Spider-Man: Far From Home” had on his personal life.
Seeking to solve this whole situation, Peter seeks the help of an old acquaintance: Dr. Strange.
It turns out that the spell cast by the wizard does not go as planned, and this brings consequences that will change the hero's life forever.
Still showing around the world, the film has already accumulated around US$1.62 billion at the box office, consolidating itself as one of Marvel's 3 best box office hits, and one of the 8 best in all of history.
