What is sign language?

But it was only in 1977 – with the creation of the National Federation for the Education and Integration of the Hearing Impaired (FENEIDA) – that the country's deaf leaders began to defend the legitimacy of the language.

In 1996, a bill was presented that aimed to regulate Libras here in Brazil and, in 2002, the law was sanctioned by Luís Inácio Lula da Silva, the acting president of the Republic at that time.

This type of measure ensures that all people who are hearing impaired are able to develop standard communication within the practiced range of the country in which they live.
