One of the latest news on streaming platforms is the arrival of the film Persuasion on Netflix.
The film – which arrived on Netflix on the 15th – is yet another adaptation of a work by writer Jane Austen.
The book in question is Persuasion, written by Austen around 1816 and became well-known for being the last complete novel she wrote.
In this film, we follow the story of Anne Elliot (Dakota Johnson), a woman who lives in a snobbish family.
And despite this snobbish attitude, the family is on the verge of bankruptcy. And as if this problem were not enough, Anne also lives the conflict of being a single woman who cannot connect with the period in which she lives.
In addition to this dilemma, Anne is also about to face another conflict: the reunion with Frederick Wentworth (Cosmo Jarvis), a passion from her past.
And that's when she finds herself torn between two options: should she choose to leave the past behind once and for all and forget this old relationship or should she listen to her heart and choose to give a second chance to the love she feels for Frederick?
All this indecision is further compounded by the fact that it was her family and friends who persuaded Anne to end her engagement to Frederick 7 years earlier.
So what? Will this couple be able to give this relationship another chance or will they leave everything behind?
In the film, the role of Anne Elliot is played by actress Dakota Johnson, who became known worldwide for starring in the franchise – which is also an adaptation of books – Fifty Shades of Grey, playing the young Anastasia Steele.
Other films based on Jane Austen's works besides the film Persuasion on Netflix
If you're not familiar with film adaptations inspired by Jane Austen's works, you should know that there are already several other films besides Persuasion on Netflix.
And so that you can get to know the Jane Austen universe even better, we have created a list of feature films that are inspired by the author's works and that will help you delve even deeper into her novels.
Sense and Sensibility (1995)
In this adaptation of a work by Jane Austen, we follow the saga of a woman and her daughters who begin to face financial difficulties after the death of her husband.
This happened because almost all of the inheritance went to a son from his first marriage. And after ignoring the promise to support their half-sisters, sisters Elinor (Emma Thompson) and Marianne (Kate Winslet) will need to figure out how to deal with the loss of wealth.
Pride and Prejudice (2004)
The adaptation of Jane Austen's most famous – and best-selling – book is also on the list.
In this version, we follow Elizabeth Bennet – played by actress Keira Knightley – a young woman who is quite independent and who, unlike her four sisters – and women of her time – does not want to get married.
This adaptation was so successful that it was nominated for four Oscar categories, including Best Actress for Keira Knightley.
Persuasion (2007), a prequel to the Netflix film Persuasion
Before the adaptation of Persuasion on Netflix, the work had already won a version for the big screen in 2007.
In this version, young Anne Elliot (Sally Hawkins) has to deal with her family's financial difficulties.
By coincidence, Captain Frederick Wentworth (Rupert Penry-Jones) returns to Anne's life years after her family advised her not to accept his marriage proposal because he was poor.
But now Wentworth is rich and always surrounded by women interested in his fortune.
Now Anne's challenge is to prove that she regrets her past decision and that, unlike all these suitors, she has always truly loved Captain Wentworth.
Pride and Prejudice and Zombies (2016)
Have you ever imagined mixing a Jane Austen work with zombies? That's what happened in this version of the classic Pride and Prejudice and Zombie.
In this new version, we follow 19th century England. At that time, a mysterious plague causes the dead to come back to life to terrorize the living, making the country a true war zone.
At that moment, Elizabeth Bennet (Lily James), a young woman who is a master of martial arts and weapons, joins forces with Mr. Darcy (Sam Riley) so that they can fight and try to save their country from such a lethal threat.
Quite different from what Jane Austen fans were used to, Pride and Prejudice and Zombies is a fun reinterpretation of the writer's work, and was quite successful on the big screen.
Emma (2020)
Another Jane Austen adaptation that hit theaters was Emma. In this film, we see actress Anya Taylor-Joy playing Emma, a rich, intelligent and beautiful young woman who runs away from relationships — but loves to pair up unlikely couples.
In addition to this version, Emma already had an adaptation in 1996, with actress Gwyneth Paltrow as the protagonist.
Conclusion
Now that you're immersed in the Jane Austen universe on the big screen, how about taking advantage of this list and binge-watching all the adaptations of the writer's works?
Considering all the success these adaptations have had, you won't regret it!
